Massive new ACCU plantation project announced

30,000 hectares will nearly match Tasmania’s existing plantation projects

A new ACCU plantation project on the Tiwi Islands (NT) will cover 30,000 hectares, almost equaling the total area of Tasmania’s plantation heartland. The project links existing plantations with a Savanna Fire Management initiative and represents a significant share of ACCU plantation potential.

Project scale and significance

At 30,000 ha, the new project on the Tiwi Islands will almost be as large as all existing ACCU plantation projects in Tasmania (currently 39,000 ha). Although the plantations will be on modest-yielding land, the project represents around 15% of all ACCU plantation projects by land area and approximately 5% of total ACCU abatement potential within the plantation method.

Integration with existing Projects

The project extends two existing plantations on the island and dovetails with a Savanna Fire Management project that has been running since 2016 and has generated 230,000 ACCUs.

Management and funding

The Tiwi Island project will be managed by River Capital / Midway Limited and has $40 million in funding from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, with a similar amount coming from River Capital. The islands already have some infrastructure to support plantations.

Existing Tiwi Island projects

The new project is not yet publicly registered but for the 3 existing projects on the islands see:

ERF204277: Tiwi Plantation Carbon Project One
Located on Melville Island, the project covers 2,709 haand involves establishing or converting plantations under the ACCU plantation forestry methodology. It primarily cultivates Acacia mangium (and historically Pinus caribaea) for the export woodchip market. Despite nutrient-poor soils, the tropical monsoonal climate supports rapid growth. This project contributes to commercial forestry while generating carbon credits for long-term tree biomass storage and is managed by Plantation Management Partners Pty Ltd.

ERF204578: Tiwi Plantation Carbon Project Two
Covering initially 2,860 hectares on Melville Island, this plantation forestry project extends the island’s commercial forestry estate under the ACCU methodology. Managed by Tiwi Plantations Pty Ltd, a wholly Indigenous-owned entity, it supports local employment and economic sustainability. The project uses species like Acacia mangium and explores new Eucalyptus varieties. It forms part of a ‘second rotation’ strategy to replant and expand plantations for commercial wood products while generating carbon credits over harvest cycles.

ERF105045: Tiwi Islands Savanna Fire Management
This project implements savanna burning practices for greenhouse gas abatement. Operating since 2016, it has generated 230,000 ACCUs. The initiative reduces emissions through controlled burns in the wet season, protecting sensitive ecosystems while providing measurable carbon offsets. It complements the island’s plantation projects by integrating land use and carbon management strategies.

The 30,000 ha Tiwi Islands project is almost as large as all existing ACCU plantations in Tasmania, linking two existing plantation projects and a Savanna Fire Management initiative. With strong funding and infrastructure already in place, it highlights how scale and strategic integration are shaping Australia’s carbon market.
